ジッポーの歴史

ジッポー社の歴史は、1932年に創業者ブレイズデルがオーストリア製ライターの販売をすることから始まりました。翌1933年、初のオリジナルとなる外ヒンジ（蝶番）付きのジッポーが作られ、無料で無期限の永久保証も同年にスタートしました。

永久保証のはじまり

永久保証を始めるきっかけになった出来事は、創業者のブレイズデルが、ジッポーの完成を記念して25個をお祝いに配ったことでした。その中の1個が故障してしまい、持ち主はジッポー社の前にあるスポーツショップにて修理の依頼をしました。すると「目の前にジッポー社があるのだから、そこに持って行ったほうが早いのでは？」とアドバイスを受け、ジッポー社のブレイズデルの元に行きました。修理を終えたブレイズデルが「無料でいいですよ」と告げると、持ち主は大変喜び、「どうもありがとう。本当にありがとう」と感謝しました。ブレイズデルは、「修理代の25セントをサービスするだけで、こんなにも喜んで頂ける」と感動し、そこからジッポーの永久保証が始まりました。

ケース形状の変化

1937年には、オリジナルジッポーを改良して新しいモデルを制作します。いままでのモデルは、サイズが大きく角張っており、蝶番も外にでているので服を傷つける場合もあったため、新しいモデルは、トップとボトムはフラットのまま、角に丸みをもたせ蝶番も内側にすっきり納められました。このモデルは現在のジッポーに限りなく近いものです。以降、内部のメカニズムの多少の改良はあったものの、機構はまったく変わっていません。

戦争とジッポー

ジッポーは戦争中の軍人達の間でも愛用されています。第二次世界大戦中の1942年から1945年の間に製造したすべてのライターは、軍隊向けとして船積みされました。しかし、それは戦時中であるためにケースの材料となる真鍮が軍事物資して統制を受けていたので、代用に質の悪いスチールを使用したものでした。この時期は、表面を黒く艶消し塗装したブラック・マット仕上げ(ブラック・クラッケル)のモデルが中心となりました。その後、朝鮮戦争を経てベトナム戦争にも参加しました。軍人のチョッキのポケットに入っていたジッポーが敵軍の弾丸を食い止め命を救った逸話や、日本に初めてジッポーが上陸したのも、この時代からです。その後も躍進を続け、アメリカの歴史にその名を刻み続けました。

ジッポーの名前の由来

「zippo」の名前の由来は、ペンシルバニアのミートビルにあるブレイズデルの友人が経営するタロン･ファスナー・カンパニー(ティラー・ジッパー)の新発明ジッパーに魅せられていたことと、単純に「ジッパー」の音の響きが気に入っていたので、これをもじって「ジッポー」と名づけました。もともとジッポーは、実用に徹したライターとして愛されていました。コレクションされるために作っているものではないにも関わらず、いつのまにか集めていってしまい、デザインや年代など、調べるほどに楽しみは深くなっていく魅力があります。

ジッポーの製造年

ジッポーは底に刻まれた刻印で製造年代が特定できるのも特徴のひとつです。ロゴのデザインは大きく分けると3種類あります。またロゴの左右を良く見ると記号のようなものが刻印されています。これが製造年を表す記号です。ジッポー社が品質管理の徹底を図るために1957年より採用している方式で、それ以前のものはUSパテント・ナンバーの有無やデザインで製造年を判別するしかないので、年号を確定できるモデルは多くありません。1986年からは、製造月も判別できるように配慮し、右側に製造年を示すローマ数字、左に製造月を示すアルファベットを刻んでいます。
